With the genuinely helpful nature of our community, it is no surprise that many area startups look to personal connections as a great way to improve their business while also being an active participant in the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Here are several helpful hints on how to better engage.

StartupBREW Fargo

Our homegrown StartupBREW Fargo kicked off in 2021 and replaced the niche previously serve by our 1 Million Cups, which had been the largest in the nation, consistently attracting 125+ attendees each week, with some weeks as high as 350! Often referred to locally as “church for entrepreneurs”, these events serve almost as a town hall gathering a vast collection of friendly and engaged citizens.

Grand Farm

As mentioned above under Emerging Prairie (EP), the Grand Farm started through EP and continues to gain more & more steam. Connections via Grand Farm are often most relevant if you are in the agricultural, agtech or food space, and their events may appeal to an even broader audience at times.

Plug And Play North Dakota

And speaking of agtech, Fargo is home to the Plug And Play North Dakota agtech accelerator. If you are a startup working in that area, check out their focus areas and how to apply. If you want to stay on top of their news, webinars and events, you can sign up for their newsletter (select North Dakota).

Growth North

Minnesota has a great food-biz support ecosystem and Grow North works to create an interconnected, sophisticated, invested, and accessible ecosystem for entrepreneurs and innovators across food and agriculture. Their primary focus is Minnesota but they encourage North Dakota-based food entrepreneurs to join their membership and support system.

Eventbrite.com, Facebook Events, Meetup.com, Etc.

Many events in our area utilize Eventbrite.com and Facebook Events to market and organize their events. Some groups use Meetup.com as their organizing platform.

Competitions

GFMEDC is involved with organizing or sponsoring various competitions throughout the year such as Startup Weekend, Established.us Startup of the Year, Spark Your Startup Idea Pitch, NDSU Innovation Challenge & more. As a participant, these are great events to build exposure and fine-tune your ideas. As a spectator or volunteer, they are an interesting way to learn more about area innovators and provide valuable feedback.
